Caught Up Challenge

I squeezed in some stamping time yesterday to do THIS WEEK'S challenge (again from SCS). Very fun indeed. It is wet and mucky here in BC (the joys of a west coast winter) and so the blah's were in full swing at our house. Everyone wanting sunshine... so I thought I'd go with bright, happy colors for my card challenge. I used the scallop punch as the base of my flower and then built it up with prima flowers. Here's the sketch for you to try....

Stamps: Love Matters
Paper: Old Olive, whisper white, pumpkin pie, basic black, DS (my stash)
Ink: brilliance black & SU Stampin' Write Markers
Accessories: corner punch, slot punch, prima flowers, scallop punch, 1/16th punch, brad, pink rhinestone
How do you find inspiration? Do you just sit and go for it when you stamp or do you CASE ideas you love?

Sketch it Wednesday.

Each Wednesday there's a sketch challenge over on SCS. I always seem to be one week behind (story of my life - LOL) so I thought I'd share with you LAST weeks sketch Challenge (aka SC160). I will work on today's challenge & hope to share that with you too. I seem to have caught the dreaded cold/flu my kids have so I'm suffering through that and moving a tad slower than usual. We also have to clear out the entire upstairs (except kids' closets as they actually sleep in there... oh the joys of living in an unfinished house!)as our floor starts getting put down tomorrow! HOW EXCITING IS THAT!?! We were able to log fir trees off our property and get them milled & dried and are using that for our hardwood floors -- pretty cool. They are wide plank board too. Beautiful. I'm just so excited to get some flooring down as that means it's ALMOST time to unpack! Living in/out of boxes & suitcases for nearly two years.... how sweet will this be. OK, back to stamping!!!
Here's the sketch. I hope by showing you the sketch, you'll be able to sit down and give it a try too. I find when I'm in a stamping block, following a sketch works amazingly well!

Here's my card using the frolicking frog set by Stampin' Up!

Enjoy your day, find time to play!

Hello Monday & Tuesday :)

**sorry ladies, blogger was down for some reason when I tried to post yesterday....**

The beginning of the week is here. The snow is trying to fall, but is failing to make any real progress :) It is cold though. Well, cold for me! LOL.
And the winner of Friday's freebie is......lucky #1!!!
Karen said...
Am I the first? Must be my lucky day!
I'd have to say Primacolour pencils. I love to colour, and I seem to reach for these more times than not. I find that I know how to use them (after all, we have been using coloured pencils since childhood!), and they do an awesome job. I like to cover my image with clear EP once it's coloured, makes it looks really finished.
Thanks for the chance to win the candy!

Thanks so much Karen, it IS YOUR LUCKY DAY! Please email me your snail mail and I'll get your goodies off to you :)

Daddy Day.

Only a couple more hours to go until we head out to the airport. YEAH!!! There's a few flakes slowly falling from the sky so hopefully a full on snow storm doesn't start up (although I've heard rumors .... hmmm.....) Still time to enter the freebie from Friday's post. I will select a winner sometime on Monday :) Keep the comments coming.

I was playing the other day & thought I'd post a pic for today :) I don't pull out my twill tape too often, so thought I'd use it to stamp my sentiment. Also popped up some of the leaves on the flower. A bit out of the box for me... but it was fun to play :)

Paper - Chocolate Chip, DP(Basic Grey), Whisper White
Stamps - Time Well Spent (SU)
Ink - Black StazOn, SU Markers, COPIC Markers (starting to play!!), Chocolate Chip
Other - Twill Ribbon (SU), Brown Brads(stash), rhinestone

Challenge

I'm really trying to participate in the weekly sketch challenge over at SCS. It's a great way to get inspired and push yourself to use the sketch they created for the week. So this week, this was the sketch we were given:

Here's my take on the sketch below:

Stamps: Walk this Way, Crosshatch, flexible phrases, Happy Everything
Paper: Old Olive, rose red, very vanilla, basic grey, imaginisce "rosies & posies" design paper
Ink: black stazon, rose red, basic grey, markers
Accessories: white brads, tab punch, ticket punch, white liquid applique, sewing machine for stitching
My kids love the liquid applique... it's one of those cards you just HAVE to touch! :) Did you participate in this challenge? If not, give this sketch a try over the weekend .... and let me know, I'd love to see yours!

Freebie.

Don't you love Fridays :) Ahhhh.... with the crazy week we've had here with sickness I am so looking forward to some weekend time (not to mention DADDY COMES HOME ON SUNDAY!) Countdown is on -- two more sleeps. :)

OK, soooo.... here are the treats to win this week.

These are unmounted (just the rubber) stamps. If you haven't worked with unmounted stamps before you can simplify it by just using double-sided tape on them, a block and then use a mousepad or something to give you a bit of cushion if you're needing it. These are a few expression stamps: thanks, thanks, Congrats!, and Stamped by me for you!

Last friday I had you leave a comment about what you've been working on these days and I was thrilled to have 30 comments by draw time! woohooo! I love to hear from you. Today, I'd like you to tell me what you're MOST USED "stamping/scrapping" item is. Aside from stamps, ink & paper cutter (we use those items EVERY TIME we stamp! LOL).... for me, I'd have to say a coloring medium. I love to color. I flip-flop between my watercolor crayons (love 'em!) and my Prismacolor Pencils. I'm slowly starting to get some COPIC marker, but have yet played enough to be proud of anything! LOL. It's not as easy as it looks! :)

I still haven't heard from Sandy, last weeks winner.... so SANDY.... :) I need your snail mail address.
Enjoy your weekend --

Tomorrow's giveaway....

just a reminder to check back tomorrow to see what Friday's surprise will be :)

Scappin'

Still not much sleep happening here as my youngest had a fever of 104 all night long... and being paranoid I had to get up and check on her every hour until finally I put her in my bed -- very long night. My eyelids are cooperating thus far though and staying open. :) I'm hoping to share a scrapbook page with you each week -- but time will tell -- those best intentions again! LOL. This is my youngest's soccer team photo. She really doesn't like soccer & we thought we'd let her quit (just wasn't worth the agony it was apparently causing her)... but after what we thought was her final game, she told us she wanted to finish out the season for her team -- I was so proud of her! :) They are the Dolphins! :)

I painted the chipboard pieces. Now I have a tip, but often I share a tip and everyone is like DUH, you didn't know that! LOL... so here it goes: As I was painting these small letters with my acrylic paints they were sliding all over the place. So I put a piece of double sided tape on my scrap paper and stuck the letters on there to hold them in place which made painting them SO MUCH easier! So maybe you knew that, but I figured it out all by myself and I thought it was a great idea :))))). I then used a outline marker to put stripes on the letters to mimic the stripes in the design paper. Put a dent in my buttons (finally) and yes, I did actually stitch them on there :) A few things I'm not totally happy with, but overall it's ok.... I need to get some photos OUT OF MY COMPUTER and into hard copy to inspire me to get scrappin' more! :)
Weekend is nearly here!!

Fever.

I'm not talking about Spring Fever or even Stamp Fever, but the real yucky FLU BUG FEVER. My oldest had it for a week, JUST got back to school and last night my younger two were up all night groaning & moaning.... the flu is back. ACK! So we've had a home day. :) reading stories while they fell asleep on the couch and movies with a few crackers. Poor monkeys.

I was in stamping mode the other night and was just picking up bits & pieces around my desk & trying to use them. Haha... can be a very interesting challenge. So I had a piece of ribbon and a chunk of Basic Grey design paper that I thought I'd put to use. Here's what I came up with :)

Wishing you all a healthy day :)

Tempting.

Do you make bread? I mean good 'ol fashion.... yeast & warm water and the muscle in your arms!! I do. I love to make bread. Don't get the chance to do it very much with life these days as it is a process. The bread machine was a great invention for those that like the IDEA of making their own bread, but it's not the same. This is a wonderful bread recipe. Sweet bread. Great toasted in the morning or one of our favorite ways is to make French Toast out of it -- MMMMMmmmm. Next time you have a day at home and you want to have your house smell amazing... give this a try. It's easier than you'd think!
Orange Cinnamon Swirl Bread

Yield - two 9x5 inch loaves (I always double it!)

1 Tbsp. active dry yeast
Pinch of sugar
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup of warm milk (microwave comes in handy again!)
1 cup orange juice (I squeeze it from the zested oranges)
1/2cup sugar
4 tbsp. butter, melted
2 eggs
Grated zest of 2 oranges
6-1/2 to 7-1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
2/3 cup sugar
1-1/2 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
2Tbsp. butter melted for brushing (I just use a knife & *spread* softened butter)

Here it goes....
1. In a small bowl, sprinkle the yeast and the pinch of sugar over the warm water. Stir to dissolve and let stand until foamy, about 10 min.
2. In a large bowl, using a whisk, (or electric mixer if you want to include technology) combine the milk, juice, sugar, butter, eggs, zest and 2 cups of flour. Beat until smooth, about 1 min. Add the yeast mixture and 1 cup more flour. Beat 1 min. more. Add the remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time to form a soft dough that just clears the sides of the bowl, switching to a wooden spoon when necessary if mixing by hand.
3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface & knead until smooth and springy, about 3 minutes (yeah, right... usually takes longer), adding 1 Tbsp. of flour at a time as necessary to prevent sticking. Place in a greased deep container, turn once to coat the top, and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise at room temp. until doubled in bulk, about 1 to 1-1/2 hours.
4. Turn the dough out onto the work surface and divide into 2 equal portions. Roll or pat each portion into a thick rectangle about 8x12 (I like to roll it thinner for more swirl...) Brush the surface with melted butter (softened butter) and sprinkle with half of the cinnamon sugar, leaving a 1" border all around the edges. Roll up jelly-roll style from narrow end to form a fat loaf shape. Pinch all the seams to completely seal. Place each loaf seam-side down in a greased 9x5" loaf pan. Lightly dust with plain ground cinnamon for decoration (I don't... kids don't like it). Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature until 1" above the rims of the pans, about 45 min. Twenty min. before baking, preheat the oven to 350.
5. Bake in center of the preheated oven until the bread is golden brown, hollow sounding when tapped and a cake tester inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 40-45 min. Remove from the pans to cool completely on racks before slicing.

I'll have something to share with you tomorrow... I just thought Tempting Tuesday was a great day to post a recipe :)

Hello Monday.

Hubby was suppose to come home this coming Friday, but flights were nasty expensive so he's having to wait until Sunday. *sigh* It's amazing even what two days makes when I'm on my own with the kids. All you single parents out there... MY HATS OFF TO YOU! Wow, you have an incredible job! So I thought this little pocket card was very fitting!! Give your guy a big cuddle tonight and be thankful he's laying there beside you :)

Stamps - On The Move (stampin' up!)
Paper - Chocolate Chip pocket card, mellow moss, regal rose, watercolor paper
Ink - Black StazOn
Other - watercolor crayons, ribbon (my stash & rose SU), heart eyelet, white brad, cuttlebug & embossing folder
This card was actually inspired by the LITTLE piece of green/brown ribbon at the bottom. I sometimes go through my design paper or other element and then base my card on that.... this time I took that piece of ribbon and thought I'd try to co-ordinate my card around that one element. What's an element that you have used to create a card/Scrapbook layout?

And the winner is.....

....SANDY!!! Who said:
Hi Jen

Love the little frog on the toadstool. I think I have a frog set with that little guy but it's a water theme. Bought cuz I had to have it and haven't even had time to use it.

Working on a music deco from over on Altered Designs - way behind but it's coming together and I'm starting to catch up.

Cheers!

Thanks Sandy for participating in my Friday giveway. Please email me your snail mail and I'll get your stamps on their way to you. It was great hearing from everyone -- I wonder what I'll giveway THIS friday :)))))

Sunday.

I will be making the draw today for the stamp set as well as showing you something I worked on last night (actually got some stamping done). We're off to church & birthday parties so it'll be in the late afternoon. I'll do the draw at 7PM (pacific time) so there's still time to "enter" :) -- it's been so fun hearing from everyone. I'm going to enjoy fridays! :)
Until then....

Weekend.

Oh the weekend is here in all it's wet & windiness. BRRR. Froze at soccer games today -- not fun. Looking forward to settling in by the fire & getting cozy, but first.... out to do a learn to run program with my sister-in-law. I loved the program, so we're going to work through it together again. I'll do my longer runs on my own, but it won't be long until she's right there with me. I'm so excited she's going to do it with me this time. :) Wonderful to have a buddy! So we'll head out to the chill and work off that whole batch of popcorn I consumed last night. I admit it - it's an addiction. YUM.
My little guy is off to a birthday party tomorrow so I used the sketch challenge over at SCS to get me inspired. It was my first ever "kickstand card". Cute, I thought :)

Stamps: frolicking frogs, office accoutrement, happy everything
Paper: basic black, bordering blue, ruby red, mellow moss, watercolor paper, Karen Foster Design's DS paper
Ink: Palette Noir, basic black marker, cranberry crisp
Accessories: Ribbon (american crafts, stsampin' up!), tab punch, watercolor crayons, aquapainter, crystal effects, corner punch, cuttlebug & embossing folder
Remember to leave a comment on yesterday's entry for your change to win :) Every friday I will either have something to giveaway or a cheap buy... be sure to tune in :)
Enjoy your day...

Blessings.

I was blessed after coming home from holidays with this beauty in my mailbox created by Melinda. Isn't it great! It's still sitting on my shelf. :) Melinda is such a wonderful woman. I met her up North Island very soon after I moved there and I still remember coming home & telling my hubby about this amazing woman that I met that just seemed to touch everyone she came across. She's one of those women that can do everything. Seriously. She was a Kindergarten teacher and she made scrapbooks for the children to take home at the end of the year -- YES FOR EACH AND EVERY CHILD! Like I said ... amazing! Even after I've moved away, she still thinks of me. Gives me warm fuzzies!! Thanks Melinda. LOVE the clear snowflake!!

Friday's are going to be my *SPECIAL* days. For the next while I will be posting sales & giveaways! Everyone LOVES free goodies. Tomorrow will be the start, and of course will start with a freebie :) So come have a peek tomorrow as I bless you :)

Goodbye.

Today is our sad day as Daddy leaves for work (commuting to another province for work isn't working so much.... guess my next title needs to be "change.") :) We miss him dreadfully when he's gone. Lots to do while he's gone with going through my stamping space.... gotta be tough and get rid of items I'm not using ... plus I can put it towards the camera I'm REALLY wanting (that goal might help me 'let go' of other goodies)! Here's a card I made quite awhile ago. I can't say it's my design by any means as I found the card in a "Take Ten" book I purchased a few years ago. It's actually made on whisper white cardstock and I achieved those colors by sponging on assorted colors (summer sun, more mustard, creamy caramel...) I actually made a bunch of these at one time and my hand got tired of all that sponging! Then I used Watercolor Garden II which is one of my favorite 2-step stamping sets by Stampin' Up! I used retired Eggplant Envy for the flowers. A flat card, with the only detail being the black grosgrain ribbon, but it caught my attention in the book & I had to recreate it :)

Simple Scrapping.

I finally dusted off a few supplies & scrapped a simple little 8x8 page of one of my favorite photos of the girls. I think it's just natural & simple so I kept the page the same way. A few touches of ribbon, a little chipboard and ribbon & that's it. I did add a bit of journaling on the back of it (mostly so I can remember). I really need to incorporate more journaling, but like everyone else hate my handwriting & don't know how to work the printer well enough to print DIRECTLY on my page. I do often print it, crop it and mount journaling, but I do tire of that look as well. So hopefully it was the start I needed to get going. I have a few more laying out on the table that I would like to finish up.... and I haven't forgotten that blog candy -- hopefully by the end of this week. Stay tuned ;-)

Stamps: Totally Tabs
Paper - Creamy Caramel(SU), Rosies & Posies(Imaginisce)
Ink - Noir Palette, Craft Rose Red(SU), Craft Baroque Burgundy (SU)
Other - ribbon (SU & We are Memory Keepers), Chipboard (SU), Tab Punch (SU)

Dream.

Well, we're off to Victoria this morning to get passports processed for the kids. Dreaming of taking a trip. :) Thought we better be prepared in case a dream comes true.
Here's a final postage card to share with you. I have some more to upload (including an 8x8 page), but I just didn't have time this morning before flying out the door here. Enjoy your week. Happy Monday. And... don't forget to dream.

Gadget.

I actually got into my scrappin' mode last night.... yeah! I have a few pages started -- all spread out. My space is always a mess!! Then I'm left working in this tiny little space on the table.... even if I try to "clean-as-I-go" (who wants to do that!) I still end up crammed with all my goodies creeping into my shrinking space. I tried 8x8 for the first time and I love it for single photos (might even have a page to share with you tomorrow!) Still needing some touches and my creative juices emptied out last night so I had to walk away and now I'm trying to put it together today. My youngest (6) is stamping too which usually involves much glue, glitter & ink. :) We'll see if I'm able to get back to my layout or not. :) I bought a gadget awhile back and I finally pulled it out yesterday -- yeehawwww~it's fantastic. If you're like me (and most paper crafters I know) you're addicted to ribbon. You've got snippets and rolls of it spilling out of drawers, on your table and in most nook&crannies in your stamping space. SO.. when you want to USE a piece, it's wrinkled & crinkled. I don't iron. Honestly. Drives my friends insane when I iron a shirt for hubby... if he has a jacket to go with it, I simply iron the front/collar! Poor guy has to deal with the heat as I DO NOT want him to take it off and show the world the back of it is WRINKLE CITY! :) So... to pull out my iron to straighten a piece of ribbon.... not gonna happen. I'll use extra glue dots and pull and hope it'll lie flat. Until.... I found this goodie!

A RIBBON IRON! You just plug 'er in. Heat 'er up. and pull your ribbon through (think hair straightener - in fact, I bet that would work!!). It was fabulous to find my curled up ribbon, pull it through and have a perfectly flat piece of ribbon.
*sigh*.... I love gadgets.

Eventful Scrappin'

I'm feeling the need to scrapbook. I've been a collector the last while or else scrappin' for gifts & others.... and not really at all for myself. This year I really want to get back into the swing of scrapbooking. I'm never "behind" as I don't scrapbook EVERYTHING. I started that way and I really should pull out those albums and figure out if I want to keep going that way or convert. I'm thinking I'd like to convert :) I started scrapbooking after my kids were older (OK, by older, I mean past the baby stage, but still under 5) and after trying to go back and "catch-up" I realized I was always feeling like I had SO MUCH to do and it zapped me of my creativity. SO... then I started doing little albums for grandparents & friends and I loved how quickly those little books came together. Then I thought I should start that myself and get out of the "BOX" that I created for myself that scrapbooking meant I had to start at the beginning and go all through each and every stage of life. SO this year I'm starting with fresh perspective. I thought I'd do a few albums of varying sizes in themes: Christmas, Birthday, Family Moments..... I did a scrapbook for my mom one Christmas that was a album and a couple of pages and then each month I created a 6x6 page for her about something that happened that month. I love going over and flipping through that album, so I'd like to do a 2008 one just for me :) One event in a month that stood out. It's time to blow the dust off my supplies.... and scrap!
I thought I'd share with you a card for a birthday party. Sarah's off to a zoo-themed birthday party this afternoon so I thought ZOOFARI would be the perfect set to use :)

Stamps - zoofari & birthday banter
Inks - palette black noir, rose red
Paper - bashful blue, chocolate chip, whisper white & rose red
Other - ribbon (assorted companies), pink rhinestone, cuttlebug, word window punch, prismacolor pencils.

Thanks.

I'm a procrastinator. I have great intentions, but don't always follow through. Now this occurs in a number of ways... I can walk by a pile of clean laundry and WISH it was folded and hope to come back and folded right away -- then a few days later I still SEE it in the basket! Argh. I'm hoping this year to conquer this. To see something that needs to be done, and simply take the 15 minutes and do it WHEN I SEE IT instead of side-stepping over it thinking I'll get to it later. This is one of the reasons I re-joined flylady -- having someone remind me throughout the day to stay-on-task is something I find useful. Being a stay-at-home mom can be a challenge as there's so many things to do it's overwhelming some days and for me, in those moments, nothing seems to get done at all. Writing thank-you cards is another one for me. I have great intentions, but then time passes & I think it's "too late" to get the card mailed out. Christmas has just ended, so my challenge for you is -- do you have any thank-you cards you need to send out? As you look back on the celebrations & season, does anyone stand out to you that touched you in some special way? Maybe a relative had the whole gang over this year and gave you a break, or someone out of the blue sent you an unexpected gift.... I bet you could touch them by a note of thanks. This is a card I made for my dad. I was nervous to drive up to my family's Christmas without hubby on those nasty roads and my Dad drove ahead of me so I wouldn't be alone. I kept the card simple. I did add some microbeads to the words (tried to get a close up shot of it but it didn't come through too well). I also have another card to mail out to my Mom's tenant. She was away and let my family stay in her suite which was so wonderful. Something she didn't have to do, so I thought a note of thanks in her mailbox was appropriate :). I hope to have a few finished up today to mail out (that's when having cards on hand is handy!!). Go for it - don't procrastinate -- give a card of thanks to someone(s) :) today!

Do you FLY?

Today was a day of puttering about -- unpacking, getting messes dealt with, laundry, going through stacks of mail -- the "chores" of home-coming. I'm not sure how many of you know about FLYLADY...I was a flybaby many years ago and have come to realize I need to rejoin! SO... I'm FLYing again. It's a great site for encouragement for organization & cleaning. And I tell ya, living in an unfinished house has got the best of me and I'm hoping this will in some strange way help me cope! We've been living in/out of boxes between the rental & here for nearly a year and a half and my coping skills are depleted. So I figure if I can look past the drywall dust and plywood floors and see my sink SHINING.... I could still smile :) So you'll hear me chit-chat about that as well... New Year always brings on early onset of Spring Cleaning. Time to rid, chuck & dump! :) Of course this means I need to carry this on into my stamp room. *sigh* What a job! I CAN DO IT THOUGH! I'll post on here some good deals, freebies & other tidbits as I go so keep a peek here and perhaps my "junk" will be your treasure :) I have a few cards to make & a lovely one I want to share with you over the next couple of days, but here's another older one I made. It's bright, quirky & fun... enjoy.

Back at home.

Here are the final two pics of the blocks. We're back at home (I'm not sure I've been away that long before!) so hopefully routines will start setting in and I'll be able to get on here daily again. If you pop by please leave a comment so I know you've been here :) I'm also going to post my FIRST ever blog candy (get with the program, I know! LOL). So that will be coming up in the next week or so. Just need to get unpacked, kids resettled into school, skating lessons, guitar lessons, piano lessons, and of course get some flooring & interior doors on in this house! HAH! What a fun & crazy life!! Resolutions... Hmmm.... need to ponder that one too. Some scrapbook resolutions - card resolutions... did any of you make any? Would love to hear what they are!

A final Merry Christmas

It's Christmas Eve here for our final celebration with my family. Christmas has sure been stretched out this year -- very special for the kids to have a Christmas "morning" with both sets of Grandparents. So it feels strange to say I'm off with my brother this morning to do some final Christmas shopping (gotta love all the sales!) So... a couple final Christmas cards to show you (again from my e-swap)& then tomorrow I'll share with you my final Christmas blocks that I've been waiting to show you. I hope you're new year & final stretch of holiday time is relaxing & enjoyable.

Happy Stamping!

Still away.

I'm still away on holidays, but have a couple photos to share with you :) This postage technique is very fun. A little time consuming, but I sometimes like that -- taking my time with a card & simply enjoying the process. I got a few new goodies for Christmas that I'm itching to play with so once I get home I hope to get some stamping time in :) ! My niece has officially stopped sucking her thumb and is having a party -- so we're off to a "done with my thumb" party! TOO CUTE!
